What a mini skip is for

A 2 or 3 m³ skip: a bathroom strip-out, a shed or laundry clear-out, or a garden tidy-up. It’s also the right size for small heavy jobs, because tiles, render or broken concrete reach the weight limit before they’d fill a bigger skip. Yarra Valley Skip Bins publishes limits of 0.6 tonnes (light) and 0.9 tonnes (heavy) for 2 m³, and 0.8 and 1.0 tonnes for 3 m³.

3 m³2.5 x 1.6 x 0.9 m (at the upper edge)2.4 x 1.5 x 0.9 m1.8 x 1.4 x 1.2 m

Length x width x height as each company publishes them. Skips taper towards the base, so measurements at the rim overstate the volume a little, and every fleet’s bins differ. Checked 1 October 2026.

By our arithmetic, a 2 m³ mini skip holds about eight 240-litre wheelie bins of waste, and a 3 m³ about twelve.

Tight, shared and steep driveways

Shared townhouse driveways, narrow carports and steep drives in the Dandenongs are where a mini skip earns its keep. A skip on the driveway needs no permit; if it has to go on the street, we arrange the council permit.

  • Measure the space: the width of the driveway, carport or gate.
  • Look up: wires, branches and carport roofs decide where it can be set down. Yarra Valley Skip Bins, for one, asks for 3.5 metres of overhead clearance.
  • Shared driveways: check with neighbours or the owners corporation, and leave room to get past.
  • Hills blocks: tell us if the drive is steep, gravel or slippery after rain.

Common questions

Does a mini skip have a door?

Usually not the smallest. Yarra Valley Skip Bins says all its bins except the 2-metre bins have doors, and ASAP Bin Hire describes its 2 m³ skip as non-walk-in and 3 m³ and above as walk-in.

How long can I keep the skip?

We confirm the hire period with the price. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days: Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists a standard 3-day hire, and M Tucker & Sons includes 3 days and charges $25.00 for each day beyond.
