Heavy waste goes in smaller skips

With soil, concrete and bricks, weight is the limit, not space.

  • 2 to 2.5 tper m³ of concrete, tiles or rubble, says Trailer Trash
  • about 1 tper m³ of dry dirt, and 1.5 to 2 t when damp, says Trailer Trash
  • 1.3 tYarra Valley Skip Bins’ limit for a 4 m³ mixed heavy load

By our arithmetic, 4 m³ of broken concrete comes to 8 to 10 tonnes. That’s why heavy jobs use 2 to 4 m³ skips, and why a skip that looks half full can already be at its limit.

Clean fill or mixed heavy

Fill either kind level with the top edge and no higher: M Tucker & Sons warns that “Overfilled bins cannot be transported and will incur a return fee charge of $110.00”.

Clean fill (usually cheapest)

  • One material only: 100% soil, 100% concrete or 100% bricks
  • Clean means clean: Eastern Recycling in Ringwood says clean soil is “DRY sand, silt or soil only” with no grass, roots or rocks
  • Turf and roots from a garden bed belong in a green waste skip

Mixed heavy (costs more)

  • Soil, rubble, tiles and some general waste together, with a weight limit
  • Not every company takes it: Suburban Skips in Kilsyth says “No mixed Dirt”

Prices: skip or tip run

Published skip prices, then what three transfer stations in the east charge if you have a trailer that can take the weight. Council hard rubbish won’t take soil, bricks, concrete or rubble anywhere in the east.

Single-material skips: one material only, filled level with the top edge. Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ price applies to 100% concrete, 100% dry dirt, 100% brick or rubble, or 100% green waste or timber, and it doesn’t offer these loads in 10 m³ or larger skips; mixed heavy loads cost more and carry a weight limit (its “heavy” price for 4 m³ is $725, up to 1.3 t). ASAP Bin Hire’s clean fill means 100% clean soil, 100% bricks or 100% concrete, with no 10 m³ or larger option published. GST not stated by either. Checked 1 October 2026.

Common questions

How long can I keep the skip?

We confirm the hire period with the price. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days: Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists a standard 3-day hire, and M Tucker & Sons includes 3 days and charges $25.00 for each day beyond.

Can the skip go on the street?

Only with a council permit, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property. On your driveway, no permit is needed. See council skip permits.
