The short answer
Skip companies in the east publish 4 m³ skips at $470 (general waste, ASAP Bin Hire), $595 (light mixed load up to 1.0 tonne, Yarra Valley Skip Bins) and from $495 (Boss Bin Hire). Soil, concrete and brick on their own are priced separately, often lower. Council permits, extra days, overweight loads, mattresses and tyres cost extra. Your price comes once we know the job.
What sets the price of a skip
- Size. From 2 m³ mini skips to 10 m³ and larger.
- Waste type. General, green, builders, or one heavy material like soil or concrete.
- Weight. Most skips have a weight limit, with a charge above it.
- Hire period. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days.
- Placement. A skip on the road needs a council permit; on the driveway it doesn’t.
- Items that cost extra. Mattresses and tyres, usually per item.

Each column is one company’s published price, not ours, and they aren’t directly comparable: Yarra Valley Skip Bins (Dixons Creek) prices “light” mixed loads with the weight limit shown and a standard 3-day hire; ASAP Bin Hire (Kilsyth) prices “general waste” from the main table on its Bayswater page (the same page shows a second, slightly higher price guide); Boss Bin Hire (Manningham) publishes “from” prices without a waste type or weight limit, and its smallest skip is 2.5 m³. Soil, concrete and brick skips
One heavy material on its own is usually cheaper than a mixed heavy load. See soil and concrete skips for why heavy waste goes in smaller skips.

Single-material skips: one material only, filled level with the top edge. Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ price applies to 100% concrete, 100% dry dirt, 100% brick or rubble, or 100% green waste or timber, and it doesn’t offer these loads in 10 m³ or larger skips; mixed heavy loads cost more and carry a weight limit (its “heavy” price for 4 m³ is $725, up to 1.3 t). ASAP Bin Hire’s clean fill means 100% clean soil, 100% bricks or 100% concrete, with no 10 m³ or larger option published. GST not stated by either. Checked 1 October 2026.

Each row is one company’s published charge. M Tucker & Sons says “All rates are including GST”; the others don’t state GST. Most companies don’t publish overweight or extra-day rates at all, so ask before you book. Checked 1 October 2026.

Local Skip Bin Hire, an online booking broker, publishes these Melbourne-wide general waste figures across 149 postcodes, updated 1 September 2026. They’re a broker’s spread across many suppliers, not prices for the east alone, and the page doesn’t say whether GST is included. Checked 1 October 2026.
Council permit fees
Only skips on the road or council land need a permit, and the skip company applies. Fees differ a lot from one council to the next. See council skip permits for the rules behind them.

Skip or tip run?
If you have a trailer and the time, a transfer station can be cheaper for a load or two. Here’s what three stations in the east charge:

Gate prices as each station publishes them for 2026–27: Knox Transfer Station and Coldstream “include GST”; Whitehorse’s prices are “inclusive of the State Government landfill levy and GST”. By our arithmetic, one tonne of rubbish taken to Whitehorse at $407.00 per tonne costs $407 in gate fees, against Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ published $595 for a 4 m³ skip with a 1.0-tonne light-load limit, delivery, collection and a 3-day hire. The skip also saves the trailer, fuel and loading twice.
The landfill levy
EPA Victoria says “A waste levy must be paid for all waste received at a landfill”. Its metropolitan rate for municipal and industrial waste rose from $169.79 per tonne in 2025–26 to $177.19 per tonne from 1 July 2026. It’s built into what tips and transfer stations charge per tonne: the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre, for one, says its prices are “inclusive of the State Government landfill levy”.

Common questions
How much is a skip bin in Melbourne’s east?
As a guide, a 4 m³ skip is published at $470 for general waste by ASAP Bin Hire, $595 for a light mixed load up to 1.0 tonne by Yarra Valley Skip Bins, and from $495 by Boss Bin Hire. The price changes with the size, the waste, its weight, the hire period and whether the skip goes on the street.
Why do skip prices vary so much?
Because companies price different things. Some quote general waste only, some light and heavy loads with weight limits, some single-material skips, and hire periods, GST and permit fees are handled differently. Compare like with like: the same size, the same waste type, the same weight limit and the same number of days.
Is a skip cheaper than going to the tip?
For a single trailer load, the tip can be cheaper if you have a trailer and the time: Knox Transfer Station charges $154.00 for a level small trailer of general waste. For a bigger job, a skip saves the trips, the trailer and the loading twice. By our arithmetic, at Whitehorse’s $407.00 per tonne for rubbish, one tonne self-hauled costs $407 in gate fees, before fuel and time.
Does the price include GST?
It depends on the company, and many don’t say. M Tucker & Sons states “All rates are including GST”; Yarra Valley Skip Bins, ASAP Bin Hire and Boss Bin Hire don’t state it on their price lists. Ask, and compare prices on the same basis.
What’s the landfill levy and does it affect skip prices?
It’s a state levy on every tonne of waste that goes to landfill. EPA Victoria’s metropolitan rate rose from $169.79 per tonne in 2025–26 to $177.19 per tonne from 1 July 2026. It’s built into what tips charge by weight: Whitehorse’s gate prices, for one, are “inclusive of the State Government landfill levy”.
