What’s free at the Knox tip

  • Televisions and computer monitors
  • Scrap metal and car batteries
  • Cardboard and X-rays
  • Commingled recycling, in household quantities

Other electrical items are $8.50 each, and e-waste has to be kept separate from other waste. Paint isn’t free here. Household batteries aren’t taken at all: the operator points to B-cycle drop-off points instead.

What Knox Transfer Station won’t take, and the site rules

  • No asbestos, hazardous waste or chemicals, food waste or liquids (motor oil excepted).
  • Enclosed footwear is mandatory: thongs, sandals or open-toe shoes can be turned away.
  • Stop at the gatehouse first. Loads can be inspected.
  • You unload your own vehicle, and children stay in the car.
  • No scavenging.

For asbestos, see asbestos disposal in Melbourne. Soil and plasterboard aren’t named on Knox’s gate prices, so ask before you load them.

Knox tip run or a skip bin?

For one trailer load, the tip is usually cheaper if you have the trailer and the time. For a bigger clear-out the trips add up. By our arithmetic, a level 6x4 trailer holds about 0.86 m³ (loaded to 0.4 m), so a 4 m³ skip’s worth of rubbish is four to five trailer loads: $616 to $770 in Knox gate fees at $154.00 a load, before fuel and the return trips.

Against that, Yarra Valley Skip Bins publishes $595 for a 4 m³ skip with a light mixed load up to 1.0 tonne and a standard 3-day hire, delivered and collected. Other companies’ prices differ: see skip bin hire cost, or skip bin, tip run or rubbish removal for the full comparison.

Knox hard rubbish or the tip?

Knox households get two booked hard rubbish collections a year, and Knox Council says you can use the transfer station once you’ve used both. See Knox hard rubbish for what the collection takes.
