Booking and putting it out
Put it out in a neat pile. If you don’t have a nature strip, call Knox first.
- Small or loose items go in boxes you don’t need back, not plastic bags.
- Fridges, freezers and e-waste come on a separate truck, in the same week.
Branches and garden waste
Hard rubbish won’t take garden waste, but Knox has two other routes for it.
- Food and garden bin: collected weekly.
- Bundled branches: collected every fortnight on your rubbish day, no booking needed. Tie bundles with natural twine, no more than 30 cm across, 1.5 m long and 30 kg. Timber, stumps, roots, soil and branches with nails or wire aren’t taken.
Where the rest can go
Knox points to the Knox Transfer Station and Recycling Facility, 251 George Street, Wantirna South, for what hard rubbish won’t take, or once you’ve used both collections: Knox doesn’t publish a paid extra collection.
- E-waste: out with a booked collection, or to the transfer station, where Knox says there’s no charge for televisions and computer monitors.
- Paint: a Paintback drop-off, or the transfer station.
- Household chemicals: the state’s free Detox Your Home events.
- Asbestos: Knox says not to cut or break it, and to check asbestos.vic.gov.au or the EPA for safe disposal.
- Soil: Knox’s own A to Z guide lists the transfer station, or “Put in a skip bin”.
Who can book
Most Knox households can: hard waste is part of both residential waste charges in 2026–27.
Properties on private rubbish collections, which includes some apartments and multi-unit developments, aren’t eligible, nor are businesses or non-rateable charity properties. In a retirement village, ask your property manager.
When a skip makes more sense
Knox hard rubbish is for household items. Renovation waste, plasterboard, bricks, concrete, soil, tiles, fencing and green waste aren’t taken by hard rubbish. For those, a builders skip (no asbestos or fibro), a soil and concrete skip or a green waste skip takes it in one go, on your driveway, when it suits you.
Skip bins in Knox: Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Rowville, Wantirna.
Common questions
Can I add my neighbour’s rubbish to my pile?
No. Knox says each collection is only for the household that booked it, and that it’s illegal to add items to a neighbour’s pile, or to leave hard rubbish out without a booking. Fines apply under Council’s local laws.
What happens if something is left behind?
Check your letterbox: Knox leaves a flyer explaining why. Anything left must be removed within 7 days, or straight away if it’s a safety risk. If nothing was collected, contact Knox within a week of your collection week.
