The short answer

Monash (Notting Hill) and Whitehorse (Vermont South) run their own centres. Knox’s listed site is the privately run Knox Transfer Station in Wantirna South. Yarra Ranges’ four are all privately run: Coldstream, Wesburn, Montrose and Lysterfield. Maroondah and Manningham have no tip of their own. None of them takes asbestos or household chemicals.

What it costs: published prices

Every facility prices loads its own way, so these are each one’s own figures, not a range. Sorting your load helps: Whitehorse says garden prunings cost less to tip than general waste, and many recyclables are free.

  • Knox and Coldstream: timber must not be manufactured, painted or treated to be charged as timber.
  • Payment: Monash and Whitehorse don’t take American Express.

What none of them take

Not taken

  • Asbestos
  • Household chemicals and hazardous waste

Where it goes instead

  • Asbestos: a landfill on EPA Victoria’s register; contact it first
  • Household chemicals: the state’s free Detox Your Home events
  • Paint: free at the Monash, Whitehorse and Coldstream centres, or a Paintback site

When a skip makes more sense

A tip run suits one car boot or trailer of rubbish. For a renovation, a clear-out or a garden that needs several trips, a skip saves the loading, driving and queueing: see published skip bin prices to compare, or pick a size.

Common questions

Can I use a tip outside my council?

Yes, as far as these facilities publish. The Monash centre is open to everyone, but since 1 July 2025 non-residents pay more, and residents must show original proof such as a driver’s licence or rates notice (no photocopies or screenshots). None of the others published a residency rule.

Do I need to book a tip visit?

No booking is mentioned by any of these facilities, and Whitehorse says outright that none is needed.
