The short answer

The Monash transfer station is the council-run Monash Recycling and Waste Centre, 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill (03 9518 3288). It’s open 7:30am to 3pm, seven days. Anyone can use it, but since 1 July 2025 non-residents pay more: a sedan boot of rubbish is $51.41 for Monash residents and $56.00 for everyone else. Bring original proof of residency, not a photocopy or screenshot.

Monash tip opening hours

7:30am to 3pm, seven days a week. It’s closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and until 1pm on Anzac Day. Monash says it may close for safety in extreme weather, including when it’s above 36°C. No booking is mentioned.

Monash resident prices and proof of residency

Monash residents and ratepayers pay less, and drop off many items free. To get resident prices, show the window operator one of these originals as you drive in:

  • Driver’s licence (the card, or the official VicRoads app)
  • A current or recent rates notice
  • A current or recent electricity, gas or internet bill

Photocopies, screenshots and photos of documents aren’t accepted; without proof, non-resident prices apply. Monash residents with a pension, seniors, veterans’ affairs or health care card get a concession rate on general waste, though Monash doesn’t publish the figure.

Free drop-offs at the Monash tip

In household quantities (a load is no more than a car boot):

  • Free for everyone: paint up to 100 litres, scrap metal such as hot water systems and bikes, lead-acid batteries, mobile phones, vapes and copper cable.
  • Free for Monash residents: e-waste with a plug or cord, household batteries, cardboard and paper, mixed recycling, soft plastics up to 0.5 m³, clothing, light globes (up to 12), and cooking or engine oil. Non-residents pay for most of these, from $3.00 a light globe to $50.00 for 1 m³ or more of cardboard.

What the Monash centre won’t take

  • Asbestos, chemicals, and liquid or hazardous waste
  • Domestic garbage
  • Petrol and fuels, and cooking oil over 20 litres
  • Car bodies, transmissions and differential oil
  • Concrete or silica dust, sawdust, and loose-fill insulation

Take any tarp off so the window operator can see the load. EFTPOS, credit cards and cash are accepted, but not AMEX. For asbestos, see asbestos disposal in Melbourne.

Monash tip run or a skip bin?

Monash’s fee page counts a 6x4 trailer loaded 0.45 m high as 1 m³. By our arithmetic at its resident rate of $220.00 per m³, that load of general waste costs $220.00, and a 4 m³ skip’s worth of rubbish is four such loads, or $880 in gate fees (non-residents $1,000), before fuel and four return trips.

Against that, Yarra Valley Skip Bins publishes $595 for a 4 m³ skip with a light mixed load up to 1.0 tonne and a standard 3-day hire, delivered and collected. Prices vary between companies: see skip bin hire cost and skip bin, tip run or rubbish removal.

Monash hard rubbish or the tip?

Monash’s 2026 hard waste run is over, and from 2027 residents book their own collection; a paid extra collection is available in the meantime. See Monash hard rubbish for what it takes.

Common questions

Can non-residents use the Monash tip?

Yes. The centre is open to everyone, but since 1 July 2025 people who aren’t Monash residents or ratepayers pay higher prices, and don’t get the free drop-offs that residents do.

What proof of residency does the Monash tip accept?

An original driver’s licence (the card or the official VicRoads app), or a current or recent rates notice or electricity, gas or internet bill. Photocopies, screenshots and photos of documents aren’t accepted.

How much is a trailer load at the Monash tip?

It depends on the trailer and how full it is. A 6 ft flat-tray trailer of general waste up to 25 cm high is $110.00 for residents and $125.00 for non-residents; a 6 ft box or cage trailer up to 100 cm high is $440.00 and $500.00. Loads are charged in 25% steps.

Does the Monash tip take soil?

Only with limited room for now: Monash asks you to call 03 9518 3288 before bringing it. Soil under 1 m³ is $452.00 for residents and $480.00 for non-residents.

Is e-waste free at the Monash tip?

For Monash residents, yes: anything with a plug or cord. Non-residents pay $7.00 a load.

3pm, every day it’s open. It opens at 7:30am.
