The short answer

Monash’s last annual collection ran by area from 13 July to 4 September 2026. From 2027 you’ll book your own, and Monash expected bookings to open from 1 July 2027. Until then, the only council option is a paid extra collection.

  • $216for an extra collection in 2026–27, GST included ($183 for pensioners)
  • 2 m³the most a paid extra takes: about 2 m long, 1 m deep and 1 m high
  • 5stacks to sort it into, because different trucks collect each

What changes in 2027

Monash decided on 27 January 2026 to move to booked hard waste from 2027, after more than 2,600 people answered its survey.

You’ll be able to book two collections a year, online or by phone, at a time that suits you. Monash’s consultation page expected bookings to open from 1 July 2027. Its own documents differ on how much each collection can take, so check Monash’s site before you book.

Apartments and units

Monash says residents of apartment buildings and other multi-unit dwellings may not be eligible, and to check with the building manager or body corporate before putting anything out.

Its waste policy asks multi-unit developments for 4 m³ of clear space per dwelling to qualify. Properties on private waste services, vacant land and commercial or retail addresses aren’t eligible.

Where the rest can go

The Monash Recycling and Waste Centre, 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill, takes most of what hard waste won’t.

  • Free for Monash residents and ratepayers: e-waste, car batteries, up to 100 litres of paint, and scrap metal.
  • Charged by the cubic metre (2026–27, as Monash publishes them): general waste, including timber, $220.00; concrete and brick $146.00; soil under 1 m³ $452.00. It has limited capacity for soil, so call first.
  • Household batteries: the Civic Centre in Glen Waverley, the Oakleigh Service Centre and Clayton Library also take them.
  • Household chemicals: the state’s free Detox Your Home events. Asbestos: Monash points to Asbestos in Victoria’s guidance.

When a skip makes more sense

Cabinetry, bricks, concrete, soil, plaster and other renovation waste aren’t taken by hard rubbish. For a kitchen or bathroom strip-out, a builders skip takes it in one go (no asbestos or fibro); for a clear-out bigger than a paid extra allows, a general waste skip on your driveway does the same.

Common questions

Can I take things from someone’s hard rubbish in Monash?

No. Monash says only its authorised collection team may gather hard waste, and it’s an offence to search through or remove items from someone else’s pile.

What happens if Monash leaves items behind?

You’ll get a notice in your letterbox, and you must remove the items within a day or fines may apply. If you put out too much on a paid collection, Monash says you can book another, wait for your next collection, or take the rest to the Monash Recycling and Waste Centre.
