Ferntree Gully took its name, first written Fern Tree Gully, from the scenic fern gully at the foot of the Dandenongs, now in the national park next door. Eastern Skip Hire delivers skips across Ferntree Gully, from Mountain Gate up to the streets on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

Ferntree Gully is all City of Knox, but it shares the 3156 postcode with Upper Ferntree Gully and Lysterfield, which are partly in Yarra Ranges. Tell us the suburb as well as the postcode, and we’ll arrange the right council’s permit if the skip has to go on the road.

A skip on the street in Ferntree Gully

On your driveway, no permit is needed. On the road or nature strip, the City of Knox wants a permit first, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property.

  • Skip company applies, not you

    Knox

Knox says residents and property owners do not need to apply: only the skip provider can. A placed skip can be at most 7.5 m long, 2.5 m wide and 1.5 m high.

Fee: $196 per placement for a one-off permit (up to 7 days, at least 14 days’ notice), or $58 per placement for accredited providers on a $563 annual permit

Every council’s rule side by side: skip bin permits in Melbourne’s east.

Ferntree Gully homes, and what they fill a skip with

A suburb of family houses, most with three bedrooms or more, by the 2021 Census.

  • 88.0%of occupied homes are separate houses
  • 50.2%have three bedrooms
  • 32.2%have four or more

Knox’s planning scheme describes the foothills as “treed slopes rising above the suburbs”, with “gently sloping and hilly terrain”, so tell us if your driveway slopes, and we’ll check the skip can sit level and safely.

New streets are on the way too: Knox is rezoning the former Norvel Road quarry for housing.

Garden clean-ups: the foothills tree rules

This is where a garden clear-out most often runs into tree rules. By our count, about 42% of Ferntree Gully’s residential land is under the Dandenong Foothills landscape overlay.

  • Dandenong Foothills overlay (Schedules 2 and 3): a permit is needed to “remove, destroy or lop a tree if it has a height of 5 metres or more or a trunk girth greater than 0.5 metre”, natives and exotics alike. Dead trees are exempt, except a standing dead tree with a trunk girth of 0.4 m or more at 1.3 m. Listed weed trees, such as sweet pittosporum, willows and privets, are exempt too.
  • Environmental Significance Overlay (about 18% of residential land, by our count): covers indigenous vegetation. Schedule 2 has no exemption for dead trees, so don’t assume a dead native can go.
  • Bushfire clearing (Clause 52.12): if your home is in the designated bushfire prone area, about 19% of residential land here by our count, you can clear any vegetation within 10 m of it, and anything but trees within 30 m, without a planning permit. It applies to homes built or approved before 10 September 2009, with conditions, so check the clause first.

A state-wide rule applies on top of that. In most residential zones (not Low Density Residential), Clause 52.37 needs a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree at least 5 m tall with a canopy averaging at least 4 m across. On a block with a house, that narrows to trees with any part of the trunk within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. A dead tree is exempt. Look up your block on VicPlan, or ask the council, before you cut.

Storms, bushfire season and clean-ups

Between June 2010 and June 2021, the SES logged 793 tree-down requests in Ferntree Gully.

In the storm of 13 February 2024, the SES Knox unit named Ferntree Gully and Knoxfield as the worst-hit areas, with trees “snapped halfway up the trunk”, as the Ferntree Gully Star Mail reported. In the February 2011 flood, Forest Road was closed, the SES says; Blind Creek begins as the Forest Road Drain here, and Ferny Creek runs through the suburb to Mountain Gate.

Knox’s 2022–2025 fire management plan rated the bushfire risk along the national park fringe as high. A green waste skip suits a block clear-up before summer.

Common questions

How do I get rid of a big garden clear-out in Ferntree Gully?

Small amounts can go in the green bin or Knox’s bundled green waste collection, which is part of the standard waste service. Knox’s hard rubbish collection doesn’t take green waste, logs or trunks, only stumps up to 1.5 m long and 30 kg. For a whole block, a green waste skip takes it in one go, or you can take trailer loads to the Knox Transfer Station in Wantirna South, about 4 km from Ferntree Gully’s edge in a straight line, by our measure.
