Is a 6 m³ skip big enough for a kitchen?
Often, yes. WM Waste’s 2018 renovation guide compares a kitchen’s waste to a car: about 4.5 m³ for a small car’s worth, and “between 6 to 8 cubic metres” for a bigger car’s worth.
Check the waste type as well as the size. Cupboards are bulky but light, while stone benchtops and tiles are heavy. ASAP’s general waste skip won’t take tiles, and Bin Hire Melbourne says large amounts of MDF cabinets need a builders bin. Tell the skip company what’s coming out, or see builders waste skips and what size skip for a renovation.
What else a 6 m³ skip suits
- Boss Bin Hire calls its 6 m³ skips “ideal for all types and sizes of domestic and commercial rubbish removal.”
- WM Waste’s 2018 guide reckons re-carpeting needs about 2 m³ per room, so a three-bedroom house is about a 6 m³ skip.

How many trailer loads and wheelie bins a 6 m³ skip holds
WM Waste says 9 to 10 trailer loads on its dimensions page and 9 in its FAQ; Trailer Trash says 9 box trailers and 24 wheelie bins. By our arithmetic, 6 m³ is about 7 level 6x4 trailer loads (at 0.86 m³ each, loaded to 0.4 m) or 25 wheelie bins (at 0.24 m³ each). The size finder works it out from your own count.
Fitting a 6 m³ skip on your driveway
On your own driveway, no permit is needed. Yarra Valley Skip Bins asks for an access driveway 3 m wide with 3.5 m of overhead clearance. A hook-lift 6 m³ needs about 4.5 m of length. On the road or council land, the skip company applies for a council permit; every 6 m³ bin above is 1.22 m high or less, under Knox’s 1.5 m height limit for skips on council land. Is a 6 m³ skip enough to clear a house?
For a smaller house, often. For a whole house with furniture, our rule of thumb is the next size up, 8 m³.
