How the allowance works
Each financial year (1 July to 30 June), Maroondah households with a residential waste service can book one of these:
- Two single hard waste collections, or two single bundled prunings collections
- One double hard waste collection, or one double prunings collection
- One single hard waste and one single prunings collection
Hard waste and prunings are booked separately, and a booking can’t be changed or cancelled once made. Up to two more paid collections a year can be booked through Council’s online booking portal; Maroondah doesn’t publish the fee.
Putting it out
The crew collects only from the nature strip and won’t come onto your property.
- Keep the pile neat, and footpaths, hydrants and pits clear.
- Put mattresses to the side, with nothing on top.
- Anything not taken gets a sticker explaining why. Remove over-limit or non-conforming items within a day, and report a missed collection within a week.
Bundled prunings
Prunings use the same two collections as hard waste, and the food and garden bin is emptied fortnightly.
- Tie bundles with natural string or twine, no more than 1.5 m long and 30 cm wide.
- Single limbs must be under 20 cm wide and 1.5 m long, with no branches attached.
- Loose clippings, stumps, soil, pots and rubble aren’t taken.
Where the rest can go
Maroondah has no council tip, and its website lists centres in neighbouring councils for what hard waste won’t take.
- E-waste and more: free collection days for Maroondah residents each May and October. In 2026, October’s is on Saturday 24 October, 8am to 2pm, at the Operations Centre, 24–28 Lincoln Road, Croydon, and you must register. They also take car batteries, gas bottles up to 9 kg and fire extinguishers, which hard waste doesn’t.
- Small e-waste: the free recycling station at Realm, 179 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood. Batteries now go in the drums at the Realm and Croydon customer service centres.
- Household chemicals: the state’s free Detox Your Home events.
- Asbestos: Maroondah says to get professional advice before handling it.
When a skip makes more sense
Maroondah names decking, pergolas, sheds, fencing and building waste as things hard waste won’t take, and caps home-improvement items at half a cubic metre. A deck or pergola demolition, a renovation, or a clean-out bigger than your allowance suits a skip: a builders skip for the timber and rubble (no asbestos or fibro), or a general waste skip for the rest, on your driveway when it suits you.
Common questions
Can I put hard rubbish out without booking in Maroondah?
No. Maroondah lists unbooked hard waste among the most commonly dumped rubbish, and dumping waste is against the law in Victoria.
