The short answer

You can’t book it: each area gets one collection week, and Council’s address lookup shows yours. Put items out where your bins are collected, by the Sunday evening before your week and no more than a week early.

  • 1scheduled collection a year, between late January and the end of March
  • 3 m³per pile: hard waste, metals and bundled branches
  • 50 kgand 1.5 m: the most any item can weigh and measure

When it comes, and how to put it out

Yarra Ranges says an on-call service isn’t viable across a shire this size, so it collects area by area. The 2026 run started on 27 January.

  • In a court, use the road reserve outside your property.
  • Separate it into piles: hard waste, metals, e-waste, bundled branches and mattresses. Piles that don’t meet the rules may not be collected.
  • Different trucks collect different piles through the week, so wait until the week ends before reporting anything missed, and report it by the Friday after.

If a pile gets a knockback notice, the trucks have moved on and won’t return: you have to take it back onto your property and dispose of it another way.

Bundled branches, twice a year

Branches go out with hard rubbish early in the year, and again in a separate run in November and December, before the fire season.

  • Up to 3 m³ and 20 bundles, tied with non-plastic string.
  • Each bundle, limb or log no more than 1.5 m long and 200 mm across; limbs between 75 mm and 200 mm can go out singly, with side branches removed.
  • Not taken: timber, stumps, roots, soil, loose garden waste, and leaves, clippings, bamboo, creepers and palms (which can go in the weekly food and garden bin).

The service is under review

Yarra Ranges surveyed residents from 2 June to 5 July 2026, and more than 15,000 took part.

The options include keeping the annual collection, a bookable once-a-year collection, or residents arranging their own disposal. Council is due to consider the results in late 2026, and says no change will happen before mid-2027 at the earliest.

Where the rest can go

Yarra Ranges has no paid extra collections. Its transfer stations are all privately run: Coldstream, Wesburn, Montrose and Lysterfield.

  • E-waste: out with hard rubbish, or to Coldstream or Wesburn transfer stations, where TVs and computers go free (Montrose charges per item); small items go to Council’s community recycling hubs, such as the Lilydale Civic Centre.
  • Paint: Paintback, free, at selected transfer stations.
  • Car batteries and BBQ gas bottles: transfer stations; Montrose doesn’t take gas bottles.
  • Household chemicals and fuels: the state’s free Detox Your Home events.

When a skip makes more sense

One collection a year is a long wait if you’re moving, renovating or clearing a property now. Building and renovation waste, soil, stumps and fencing aren’t taken by hard rubbish. A skip on your driveway takes it when you’re ready: a general waste skip for a clear-out, a builders skip for renovation waste (no asbestos or fibro), or a green waste skip for a block clean-up before summer (tell us about stumps first).
