Mattress disposal: two old mattresses wrapped in plastic against a garage wall, beside a teal skip holding boxes and an old timber bed frame

Mattress disposalCouncils, tips and recycling in Melbourne’s east

An old mattress has three ways out in Melbourne’s east: council hard rubbish, a tip, or a recycler’s kerbside collection. Here’s what each costs and allows.

  • Every council’s mattress limit
  • 2026–27 tip fees as published
  • A recycler that collects

The short answer

Your council’s hard rubbish collection is usually the cheapest way: every council in the east takes mattresses, within a limit. Otherwise, a tip charges per mattress, and a recycler will collect from your kerb for a fee. Mattresses aren’t banned from landfill in Victoria.

A recycler’s kerbside collection

Soft Landing, an Aboriginal-led not-for-profit social enterprise and an approved recycler under the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council, collects from the kerb on Fridays across most of the east. Maroondah Council lists it on its mattress page.

  • Price: $78 for the first piece and $65 for each additional one, GST included (as of 1 July 2026). A mattress and a base are a piece each.
  • Where: most suburbs in Knox, Maroondah, Monash, Whitehorse and Manningham, and western Yarra Ranges. Not Healesville, Coldstream, Yarra Junction, Belgrave, Monbulk or Warburton.
  • Putting it out: on the kerb the day before. Cancelling after 2pm on the day before costs $26.18.
  • Not taken: slat bases, bases with drawers, motorised beds, and anything with bed bugs or other vermin, blood or excrement. Wet or mouldy mattresses are fine.

It has no single-mattress drop-off in Melbourne: its Bayswater site takes drop-offs by appointment, from 20 mattresses.

A mattress in a skip

If you’re clearing out more than a bed, a mattress can usually go in the skip too. Because tips charge for each one, a mattress in a skip costs extra: tell us how many when you book, and we’ll confirm the price before delivery. What can go in a skip bin covers the rest.

Common questions

Can I leave an old mattress on the nature strip?

Only for a booked hard rubbish collection, or in your area’s collection week in Yarra Ranges. EPA Victoria says it’s illegal to leave any kind of waste somewhere not licensed to accept it, and names mattresses among the dumped household waste to report to your council.

Are mattresses from hard rubbish recycled?

In Maroondah, yes: Council says mattresses, scrap metal and e-waste from hard waste are collected for recycling, while other household items go to landfill. The other councils don’t say on the pages we read.
