The short answer
Plasterboard goes in a builders or renovation skip, or to a transfer station, where it’s charged as general waste: none of the tips in the east publishes a separate plasterboard price. Council hard rubbish won’t take it in any of the six councils. It’s light for its bulk: by our arithmetic, a skip of plasterboard alone stays within Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ light-load limits. If the house was built or renovated before 1990, have the sheeting checked before it comes down: you can’t tell asbestos cement sheet from plasterboard by looking, and asbestos never goes in a skip.
Can plasterboard go in a skip bin?
Yes, in a skip booked for builders or renovation waste. Two skip companies in the east say so in their own terms:
- Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists “Building materials such as wood, plaster, metal, glass” as allowable, and asbestos cement sheeting and insulation as unacceptable.
- ASAP Bin Hire takes plasterboard in its Commercial Waste bins (2 to 8 m³). Its 10 and 12 m³ General Waste bins say no plaster or plasterboard, and its smaller General Waste bins don’t say either way, so ask.
On ASAP’s own Bayswater price list, the bin that takes plasterboard costs more: by our arithmetic, its Commercial bins are $80 more than its General bins at 2 and 4 m³ ($370 against $290, $550 against $470) and $160 more at 6 and 8 m³. When you book, say plasterboard is going in, so the skip and the price match the load.
Council hard rubbish won’t take plasterboard
None of the six councils in the east collects plasterboard as hard rubbish. Each sends it to a transfer station:
Plasterboard and council hard rubbish
| Council | Hard rubbish rule | Where the council says it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Knox | Not accepted: “Gyprock, cement sheet or plaster” | Knox Transfer Station |
| Maroondah | Not accepted: “cement sheeting, fibro, plasterboard and asbestos” | A recycling and waste centre, where charges may apply |
| Yarra Ranges | Not collected: building, renovation or demolition material | A waste transfer station |
| Monash | Not accepted: “Cement sheeting, fibreboard (MDF), plaster” | A recycling centre |
| Whitehorse | Not collected: building and renovation waste, including plaster | Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre, where charges may apply |
| Manningham | Not collected: renovation material “Including … cement sheets or plaster” | A local transfer station |
From each council’s own hard rubbish page and A to Z waste guide, checked 22 October 2026. Yarra Ranges’ hard rubbish page doesn’t name plasterboard; its A to Z guide sends plasterboard to a transfer station.
Full lists and booking details are in each council’s guide: Knox, Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Monash, Whitehorse and Manningham.
Plasterboard at the tip: what it costs
No transfer station in the east publishes a plasterboard price. Eastern Recycling in Ringwood lists “Building materials such as plaster” as allowable, and Montrose accepts construction and demolition waste; the others don’t name plasterboard on their price lists. Expect it to be charged as general or mixed waste, and call the station first if you have a trailer of it. Their general waste prices for a small trailer or ute:
General waste prices at transfer stations in the east, 2026–27
| Station and load | Published price | Who publishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Knox Transfer Station (small trailer, van or ute, level, up to 6x4) | $154.00 | Knox Transfer Station operator (GST included) |
| Coldstream (small trailer, van or ute, level, up to 6x4) | $165.00 | Yarra Ranges Recycling Services (GST included) |
| Montrose (6x4 single axle trailer, level) | $165 | Montrose Transfer Station (GST and levy included) |
| Whitehorse centre (ute, van, trailer) | $407.00 per tonne, minimum $125.00 (up to 300 kg) | Whitehorse City Council (levy and GST included) |
| Eastern Recycling, Ringwood (vans, trailers and utes) | $410 per tonne, minimum $120 | Eastern Recycling (GST not stated) |
| Monash centre, resident (general waste including timber) | $220.00 per m³ | City of Monash (GST not stated) |
Each station’s own price as at 1 July 2026, not a range; they measure loads differently. Checked 22 October 2026. No station lists plasterboard as a separate item, so ask how a load of it will be charged.

Plasterboard or fibro? Check before it comes down
In older homes, the sheeting on walls and ceilings may not be plasterboard at all. The Victorian Asbestos Hub says that if a home was built or renovated before 1990 it likely contains asbestos, including in ceilings and walls and the wall linings behind tiles in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.
You can’t settle it by looking. The Hub says “You cannot confirm asbestos just by looking at a material”, that only a NATA-accredited laboratory can confirm it, and that cutting, drilling, sanding or breaking it can release fibres. Arrange a professional assessment, with testing by a NATA-accredited laboratory, or treat it as asbestos.
Asbestos never goes in a skip, a skip bag or a household bin. See asbestos disposal in Melbourne for licensed removal and the landfills that accept it.
How much plasterboard weighs, and what size skip
Plasterboard is bulky but fairly light: by our arithmetic, a skip of it alone stays within Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ light-load limits. Gyprock publishes these nominal weights:
Plasterboard weight per square metre and per sheet
| Board | Published weight | One 2,400 × 1,200 mm sheet (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| Gyprock Plus, 10 mm (walls) | 5.7 kg/m² | About 16.4 kg |
| Gyprock Supaceil, 10 mm (ceilings) | 6.1 kg/m² | About 17.6 kg |
| Gyprock Standard, 13 mm | 8.5 kg/m² | About 24.5 kg |
Weights as CSR Gyprock publishes them, “subject to reasonable manufacturing variance”, checked 22 October 2026. Per-sheet figures are ours: the published kg/m² × 2.88 m².
Worked out for one room, by our arithmetic: a 4 × 3 m room with 2.4 m walls has about 33.6 m² of wall and 12 m² of ceiling. Lined in 10 mm Gyprock Plus at 5.7 kg/m², that’s about 260 kg, before doors, windows and offcuts. Broken up, at EPA Victoria’s figure of 0.22 tonnes per cubic metre for stockpiled plasterboard, it takes about 1.2 m³; loosely thrown sheets take more room than that.
So one room fits a 2 m³ mini skip, within Yarra Valley Skip Bins’ published 0.6 t light-load limit. A whole house of linings, or plasterboard mixed with tiles and timber, needs a bigger skip: see what size skip for a renovation, or work it out with the skip bin size calculator.
Can plasterboard be recycled in Melbourne?
Clean plasterboard can be. Planet Ark’s BusinessRecycling directory says “Uncontaminated plasterboard is completely recyclable”, and that commercial recyclers and some manufacturers take used board from building and demolition projects, usually with low contamination.
REGYP, a plasterboard recycler with a Melbourne site, takes clean board from construction, demolition and renovation work. Its own rules: up to 1% contamination, no insulation, timber, concrete or brick, ceiling tiles, fibre cement or asbestos, and a customer code to tip. It publishes no price and it’s set up for builders and waste contractors, so call before taking a load.
For a household renovation, that usually means keeping offcuts clean and separate if a recycler will take them, and otherwise a builders skip or the transfer station.
Common questions
Can you put plasterboard in a skip bin?
Yes, in a skip booked for builders or renovation waste. Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists plaster among allowable building materials, and ASAP Bin Hire takes plasterboard in its Commercial Waste bins. Say it’s going in when you book. Asbestos cement sheet never goes in a skip, and you can’t tell it from plasterboard by looking.
Will council hard rubbish take plasterboard?
No. Knox, Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Monash, Whitehorse and Manningham all exclude plasterboard or plaster, as building and renovation waste, and send it to a transfer station.
How much does the tip charge for plasterboard?
No transfer station in the east publishes a plasterboard price, so expect general waste rates: Knox Transfer Station charges $154.00 for a level small trailer of general waste and Coldstream $165.00, both including GST. Call first to check how they’ll charge a load of it.
How much does a sheet of plasterboard weigh?
Gyprock publishes 5.7 kg/m² for its 10 mm Plus board and 8.5 kg/m² for 13 mm Standard. By our arithmetic, a 2,400 × 1,200 mm sheet weighs about 16.4 kg in 10 mm and 24.5 kg in 13 mm.
How do I know if old wall sheeting is plasterboard or asbestos?
You can’t tell by looking. The Victorian Asbestos Hub says only a NATA-accredited laboratory can confirm asbestos, and that homes built or renovated before 1990 likely contain it. Arrange a professional assessment, or treat it as asbestos and keep it out of the skip.
Can I put plasterboard in a skip bag?
Check first. Croc Bags lets plaster go only to the line 200 mm up the bag, and Aussie Skip Bags doesn’t name plasterboard. By our arithmetic, at EPA Victoria’s 0.22 tonnes per cubic metre, a bag filled to the top with broken plasterboard can go over a limit such as Aussie Skip Bags’ 600 kg for its 3 m³ bag.
